The headquarters of the ESA in Spain is located in one of the most beautiful natural parks to the north of Madrid. The location for the new building containing changing rooms for the ESAC is next to an existing sports field.
In order to integrate the building in the landscape and leave the surroundings as natural as possible, it has been sunken into the ground where the topography permits and where no trees had to be cut down. In this way the concrete wall to the rear acts as a retaining wall and access occurs through the glazed front facade that brings natural light into the interior. The landscaped roof helps to further camouflage the building among the trees.
Given the tight budget, the interiors are finished with austere and recycled materials giving them an industrial appearance.
La sede de la ESA en España se halla en uno de los parajes de encinas más bellos del norte-oeste de Madrid. En este entorno natural, junto a una pista deportiva existente, se sitúa el edificio de vestuarios con una sala polivalente de la ESAC.
Con el fin de integrar el edificio en el paisaje y dejar el entorno lo más natural posible, los vestuarios se semientierran en un área donde la topografía lo permite y donde no hay que talar ningún árbol. De este modo, la fachada posterior de hormigón sirve de muro de contención de las tierras y la fachada frontal acristalada permite el acceso y la iluminación natural. La cubierta del edificio forma una terraza entre los árboles.
Dado el bajo presupuesto, los interiores están acabados con materiales austeros y reciclados, dotando al conjunto de un aspecto industrial.
Das spanische Zentrum der Europäischen Weltraumbehörde ESA „European Space Astronomy Centre“ (ESAC) befindet sich in einem geschützten Steineichenhain im Norden von Madrid. Das Umkleidegebäude mit Gymnastikraum der ESAC ist innerhalb des Grundstückes, abgelegen von den Büros und direkt neben dem vorhandenen Sportplatz errichtet.
Um das Gebäude in die Landschaft zu integrieren und die Umgebung so natürlich wie möglich zu belassen, ist das Erdgeschoss in den Hang eingelassen, soweit es die Topografie und der Baumbestand erlaubten. Die Rückseite des Gebäudes bildet eine Stützmauer aus Beton. Von dort aus ist das Dach des Gebäudes begehbar und als Terrasse nutzbar. Die verglaste Eingangsseite richtet sich zum Sportplatz aus und stellt die einzige Fassade dar.
Aufgrund des eng gesteckten Kostenrahmens sind die Inneräume in einfachen und wiederverwendbaren Materialien ausgeführt. Das Gebäude erhält dadurch einen industriellen Charakter.
